Our perception of Chagall, perhaps the most singular of 20th-century painters, is made clear by this original study which renews understanding of an untrammelled art, a primordial outpouring of painting. Illustrated by works in hitherto unpublished Russian collections, this approach shows how painting for the rebel artist is first and foremost, a personal adventure, a flight of the imagination.
