Tairawhiti Waka Hourua; Crew manual and sailing curriculum

McMaster, Christopher

Notes
Our waka, Tairawhiti, is named after the Gisborne/East Coast area. It means, "the coast where the sun shines." The colourful artwork on the hulls of our waka also portray this meaning.
Tairawhiti follows those great nautical traditions providing an alternative platform as a floating classroom for the benefit of every school pupil in the Tairawhiti region. It is also an opportunity to share our proud waka history with the wider community, visitors and tourists.
The material in this crew manual and sailing curriculum covers essential areas of knowledge on the waka. As such, it can serve as a base for eventual mastery of those skills, as well as a base for further learning. It is designed to contribute towards developing a high level of competency and consistency in practice on board the waka Tairawhiti. The student, kaumoana or teacher using this manual can take any area and follow (or create) an individual voyage in learning.
This manual/curriculum is also designed to inform kaumoana/crew about the sailing of Tairawhiti. People learn in different ways. most of the learning done on Tairawhiti is hands on. The material in this manual is meant to reinforce and deepen that learning. Some pages are step by step 'how to' in nature. They are helpful in remembering what you may have learnt, or preparing and refreshing you before you sail. other pages offer information to deepen understanding, wether about tikanga or physics.
This manual/curriculum is presented as a reference and as a guide. It is not intended to be comprehensive. Learning continues in a deepening process. hopefully, this materia will provide a platform from which to deepen your understanding and knowledge.
