The frightened pup pulled and tugged to free his foot to follow his parents, but nothing he did brought release. He howled and whined, but no one came again to help him. Darkness soon overtook the evening sky. Stars filled the space above his head, and the moon shined bright. A cold wind stirred the trees and bushes around him while the tall trees cast shadows along the frosted ground. The pup's belly growled; he shivered from the cold and whined for his momma. The moon traveled across the sky while the stars sparkled. Eventually the exhausted pup fell asleep.
